說唱樂的起源可以追溯到黑人音樂根源中吟詠的段落中，到了70年代說唱樂正式確立了自己的風格，其中最主要的功勞要歸根於當時流行的迪斯科舞廳中的DJ們，他們將黑人當時正在風行的FUNK節奏混入流行的迪斯科節奏中，並且在唱片機上反覆重複同一張的唱片的內容，做自己的LOOPS，隨着那些廣爲人知和DJ們普遍應用的“打碟”法出現，說唱開始被街頭黑人文化所流傳，並且衍生出相當豐富的分支，諸如西海岸說唱樂(West Coast Rap)、南部說唱樂(Southern Rap）、流行說唱樂(Pop Rap）、老派說唱樂(Old Schold）、中西部說唱樂(Midwest Rap）、拉丁說唱(Latin Rap）、硬核說唱（Hardcore Rap）、黑幫說唱(Gangsta Rap）、外來說唱樂(Foreign Rap）、東海岸說唱樂（East Coast Rap）、過渡說唱樂(Crossover Rap）、喜劇說唱樂(Comedy Rap）、基督教說唱(Christian Rap）、另類說唱樂（Alternative Rap）等等，我們所謂的HIP-HOP正是由這些流派綜合了流行元素而誕生的新詞彙。

儘管早在90年代初期就有人認爲這種絮絮叨叨，滿是髒話粗口，叛逆詞語的音樂會很快消失，而事實上，在90年代末，隨着一批新進的說唱樂手和以白人爲主的說唱搖滾的風行，曾經被黑人拋棄的音樂又重新回到了流行音樂的前端，在新世紀，這個風潮還不會消退。

Hip-Hop很早發源於美國的黑人流行節奏舞曲，節奏快，當今的 Hip-Hop融入了大量電子舞曲的形式，成爲當今流行音樂中的主流勢力； 老式說唱，指那些早在七十年代末，八十年代初的說唱樂歌手們的曲風。在此一時期"舊式說唱樂"的風格很明顯，樂曲總是伴有單調而直白的鼓點，說唱樂手也很少在樂曲中間斷。
